This happened at the Rotary Club of La Quinta on 9/14/18
Today our guest was Executive Director Doug Morin, representing Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine (CVVIM), located at 82915 Ave. 48th at Jackson in Indio.
Doug shared with our members that CVVIM is the only free medical clinic providing healthcare to medically underserved Coachella Valley residents. CVVIM serves Coachella Valley residents 18 years and older whose income is below the poverty line (e.g. a single person making less than $24,000 a year), and those people who can't afford medical insurance. CVVIM sees approximately 1000 patients per year, totaling some 3,000 face-to-face visits.
Who comes to receive free primary medical and dental care?  Their typical patient is a person working less than 30 hours a week without medical benefits, or someone self-employed without insurance (gardeners, housekeepers, etc.), or an unemployed person between jobs, or an uninsured worker with a seasonal job (agricultural, hotel service), or a spouse whose husband or wife may be insured but he or she is not. The Clinic also provides coupons for low-cost prescriptions ($5-$10).
CVVIM offers primary care to their clients.  For conditions requiring a specialist there is a network of specialists here in Coachella Valley that offer free service to referred individuals including cardiologists, neurologists, pulmonologists, and many more.  50% of the patients cared for by CVVIM are diabetics and some of those patients have additional afflictions such as dental problems or skin infections. All clients are served by volunteer physicians and dentists who are supported by a staff of seven who work for CVVIM.  The Clinic's annual budget of $600,000 and is funded by individuals, organizations, grants, and local area hospitals. No federal or state funding is provided.
The Rotary Club of La Quinta thanks CVVIM for its outstanding service to our beloved community and to Doug Morin for taking the time to share with us about this amazing organization and the volunteer physicians and dentists who practice “Service Above Self” on a daily basis.  To learn more about the Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine or to donate to this very worthy cause please visit their website at:
