President Corry Hunter called the 9th meeting of the 28th year of our La Quinta Rotary Club to order and had immediate past president Sandy Stewart lead us in the pledge.  Our speaker Lt. Sean Kelsey followed the flag salute with a very nice invocation.

President Corry made good on his promise to keep the announcements short this week reminding us only of the following:

The next club board meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 17th, at Baird Boucher’s (Wholesale Jewelry) store in La Quinta starting at 5:30 PM.

Lots of good spaces still available!

There will be a FOOTBALL MIXER at the Cliff House on Sunday night, October 19th.  Joe LaMantia has prepared a Football Pool Board and was selling spots at $5.00 apiece.  Winners need not be present so even if you do not plan on attending this fun event you can still participate in the pool as the board will be at the next few meetings.

The Patriot Ride/Walk will be held on October 25, 2014.

Rotary Aprons will be on sale with Sandy Lauer heading up the purchasing department.  The aprons will be ½ off… well; actually the club will pay the other half.  More info to follow!

With over $100.00 in the jackpot this week Andy Lorenz managed to draw a white marble and win only $5.00 of it!

Favorite Server Emilio with Ice Cream Pie for all!!!

The lunch choices today were the South Western Penne Pasta, the traditional Chicken Caesar salad with fresh parmesan cheese and homemade Caesar dressing, or a bowl of Seafood Clam Chowder accompanied by ½ a grilled cheese sandwich, all served with a nice slice of Ice Cream Pie to top everyone’s meal off!

Our Fine Master Walter Keating frowned as he looked at his list for eligible fine-ees.  A few no make-ups here and there, an anniversary and he was down to happy dollars of which only a small flurry came in.  Of special note was Walter fining himself for his anticipated absences for the next 7 weeks!  The rumor has it that Allan and Bruce will be fining the members in his absence… so you better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, I’m telling you why…

President Corry with our speaker Lt. Sean Kelsey

We were once again delighted to have Lieutenant Sean Kelsey of the Salvation Army back to speak with our members this day.  He began by sharing that our missing member Lothar Vasholz was doing GREAT and that he was expected to return to the Desert this week.  Lothar is without question one of our most dedicated Rotarians who has been very instrumental in creating opportunities for our members to help the Salvation Army with their annual Kettle (bell ringing) Campaign and their annual Veteran’s Expo (where we do all the hot dog cooking each year).  Sean thanked us profusely for our participation in each of these events and assured us that the “grill” had been reserved for this year’s upcoming Expo to take place on 10/11/14.  In addition, Sean informed us that this year there will be a Kettle Kick off at the Westin Mission Hills on November 1st and that everyone was invited.  The actual bell ringing won’t start until November 27th when we will all have the opportunity to help the Salvation Army raise the majority of the funds that sustains this fine organization throughout the rest of the year.  Sean also shared with us about the Salvation Army’s latest project in Cathedral City where they are engaged in fund raising efforts to build a new gymnasium on their current site for the local youth to have a place to go for fun, safe, supervised activities.  So far they are half way to their goal of raising $3,000,000.00!  Before finishing Sean eagerly answered questions about the history of the Salvation Army and its hierarchical structure.  Sean is always a very good and entertaining speaker and we look forward to working alongside of him at both the Veteran’s Expo and the Kettle Campaign this year.

President Corry closed out the meeting leading the members in the four way test.

Editor’s note:  There was an Anderson sighting in Italy this past week.  All is fine and Dick and Helen are enjoying great food and great wine in Cortona, was the message.
